The Upside of Divorce

In Everyday life on December 28, 2008 at 7:10 pm

For me, there are many. The one on my mind today is the lovely weekend I just spent with friends, eating, going to the spa, laughing and relaxing. The kids were with Dad.

Needless to say that before the divorce, I NEVER would have been able to go away for the weekend. I wasn’t even able to go out for  more than 4 hours without being called back home.

Hanukkah. Check.

In Kids, Things they say on December 21, 2008 at 6:51 pm

It’s December 21st and I’m basically done with the holiday madness. I love being Jewish.

Our Hanukkah was extremely low key and successful. I even got three presents from my daughter — a wooden heart, a glass heart and a star with her picture in it. The theme was “I love Mommy.”

Life is good.

Blood is thicker than divorce

In The ex on December 19, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I am happier in almost every way since DB “left my ass”. (I insist on using his phrase for our breakup. It always reminds me of what a great guy he is) One of the only things that really makes me sad, aside from the fact that I have to share my fabulous children with such an ass, is that I’m no longer part of his extended family on his father’s side. I really loved those people — his grandmother, father, aunts and uncles, and cousins.

This is the first Christmas in seven years that I won’t be seeing them. It’s been making me cry.

I miss you guys, and will always be glad that you were a part of my life.

Mission Accomplished

In Everyday life, Kids on December 19, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Has that expression been forever tainted by George Bush?

One Hanukkah party down. Accomplished:

  1. The consumption of 4.5 pounds of deli meat, 3 pounds of potatoes (latkes, baby!), 8 chocolate milks, a bottle of wine and countless cupcakes, cookies and doughnuts.
  2. A dreidel game, with no bloodshed.
  3. Pin the flame on the menorah. Everyone peeked.
  4. Presents for all.
  5. The distribution of homemade coloring books explaining Hanukkah to all of the non-Jews in attendance (read: 90% of our friends)

And all before the enormous snowstorm hit. Phew.

No school

In WTF??? on December 19, 2008 at 8:36 am

Is it still called a snow day if school is cancelled before the first flake falls from the sky? How about a “we just can’t be bothered” day?

Because I don’t have enough to do

In Kids, Off topic on December 17, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I just spent two hours putting together a Hanukkah coloring book for our upcoming Hanukkah party.

This is the down side of being a professional graphic designer — I really can’t help myself. I chose fonts, made a template, and edited the text to fit.

Meanwhile, 5 or 6 projects sit on my desk, incomplete. I’m so proud.

Well, OK…

“Mama, here’s something you’re really going to enjoy.”

Turns and moons me.

Gotta love them

When it come to sleeping, my kids are good eaters.

And when it comes to eating, my daughter can do a forward roll.

The sweetest girl in the world

In Kids on December 10, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Every year since my daughter was 1, my ex and I have taken her (and now my son) to see the huge holiday light display in a nearby town. It’s a whole park filled with light displays and it’s pretty spectacular.

Today when DB came to pick up the kids for his weekly dinner visit, he announces that HE’S taking the kids to see the lights. Thanks, Douche. Way to sweep in and take over the family tradition.

So my incredibly sweet girl asks to take my camera with her. Why? So she can show me the lights, “and it will be like you’re there, Mama.”

She is just so dear to me.

Not fair

My 21 year old cousin has cancer. He starts chemotherapy today.

Love to you, J, and know that I’m thinking of you.
